Pandit Birju Maharaj belongs from a family with a strong tradition in Kathak, and his journey has played a crucial role in shaping the dance style.
Pandit Birju Maharaj started learning Kathak when he was too young starting at a age of just seven years old. He started learning from his family, especially from his father and guru Acchan Maharaj and his uncles Shambhu Maharaj & Lachhu Maharaj, who were themselves Kathak dancers, guided him in the early years of his training. From the very young age, Birju showed immense dedication, practicing long hours to grasp the complex movements and rhythms.
As Maharaj ji grew older, he did not limit himself to practising traditional Kathak alone. He added his own touch, blending classical elements with new ideas. The creative approach by Maharaj ji breathed fresh life into Kathak, making it more expressive and appealing to a broader audience. His performances became not just a showcase of skill but also powerful stories conveyed through dance.
Dedicated and Talented Birju Maharaj earned numerous awards, with the Padma Vibhushan (India’s Second highest Civilian award) in 1986. Along with his uncle, Shambhu Maharaj he worked at Bhartiya Kala Kendra (later Kala Kendra) in New Delhi for several years. And later after his retirement in 1998 he opened his own dance school, Kalashram, located in Delhi. His influence has not only preserved the traditional aspects of Kathak but has also encouraged its growth and adaptation to contemporary tastes.
